Behaviour Based

Braitenberg Vehices

(pronouned brighten-berg).

The researcher:

A series of vehicles exhibiting emotional behaviours using sensory information to modify actuator speeds and directions.

These vehicles provide basic behaviours for autonomous robots. This link provides details on the various vehicles

Subsumption Architecture

The wiki article is bit sparse - Brooks' papers provide more a through study.

In essence:

  • layered behaviours
  • behaviours overriding other base behaviours (subsumes the base behaviour)
  • overall control can be considered another behaviour which determines which of the other behaviours has precedence.

For example: the base behaviour might be to move forward. An avoidance behaviour may be triggered and overtake the base behaviour. A path plan may intercede by triggering various behaviours to correct the course of the robot.
