HBRC 2013 Club Bot: Motor + Wheels Order

Fri, 03/15/2013 - 20:19

We are getting ready to order some gear motors and wheels for
the HBRC 2013 Club Bot class. As I mentioned at the HBRC meeting
on Wednesday, we are going to allow people who wish to tag along
with the order to do so. If you are in the class, your robot kit
fee already includes the needed motors and wheels. This offer is

Open Hardware Mobile Manipulator

Fri, 03/15/2013 - 04:44

I ran into the Open Hardware Mobile Manipulator project from Northeastern

It looks like an interesting project. Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts?

Does anyone know/remember the name of the speaker? I don't see it on
the meeting details on the club website.

Charger left at Hacker Dojo

Thu, 03/14/2013 - 09:36
I think I might have left a battery charger at the Haker Dojo (this months SIG)...
That was over a week ago so it might be gone forever. There is still hope though, maybe someone has it.

XV-11 LDS sensor callibration

Mon, 03/11/2013 - 08:38
I am using ROS and RVIZ to experiment with the XV-11 Laser Distance sensor. It seems to work ok, (sees 360 with few blind spots, but it's range seems pretty limited - after about a meter, everything drops off abruptly. Also it seems some things like dark clothing, are invisible to it.

Are there some calibration parameters that need to be tweaked?

Lost and Found

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 22:42

There was quite a bit of stuff left behind at tonight's meeting.
There was a nice jacket, a "milk crate" with some electronics
in it, some weird video phone like things, etc. All of this
stuff has been transferred to Google security Lost + Found.
(Alas, I have misplaced the address...)

HBRC Meeting Tonight at 7pm

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 19:06

(Collectively, we totally dropped the ball on getting the
HBRobotics.Org web site updated for tonight's meeting.
We'll do better next time.)

Tonight's meeting is at 7pm. I am 98% sure that it is at
the Google Crusher Meeting room. I'll send out a follow
up message when I get final confirmation.

Demo robots at California Academy of Science Nightlife - Thursday March 7

Sun, 03/10/2013 - 05:47
Nightlife is a great evening event with a special theme - it's Robots
again! and there will be robots roaming around, speakers and maybe even
robot themed cocktails.

The event runs from 6pm -10pm. I'm hoping that someone will coordinate a
Homebrew group (you may already be going!) but I'm also collecting sign ups

A small matter of list etiquette: don't reply to existing post to start a new topic

When you want to start a conversation on a new topic, please do not reply

USB on mini-ITX

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 03:18

Did you use the "extra" USB headers on the front of the mini-ITX? I had
a conflict when I tried them (might not have done it right).

ros_arduino_bridge on new PI robot

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 03:18
Hi Patrick,

I was looking a your "Head Tracking using OpenCV" blog, and I remembered
that you said something like the ros_arduino_bridge package is being
used on the new PI Robot. Did I get that right?

I had just installed the pi_head_tracking_tutorial (electric) on my
(diamonback, oops?). And thought I'd look for a closer match to using

Home made X-Ray Machines....

Mon, 03/04/2013 - 23:15
At the last club meeting we were having a joking discussion about people
making home-made X-Ray machines, and the danger involved.

Anyway, I noticed that someone posted a great Intructable on it...and
the dangers are well documented too.

Neato LDS and ros/rviz. (Fuerte)

Sat, 03/02/2013 - 02:52
Not sure if my problem is with rviz or with the neato driver.

I can run my Kinnects (turtlebot bringup or just the openni launch) and get images from the camera with the ros and rviz, but it gives me warnings on the point cloud data - saying no topic found

I can use the image command and get the depth data though, and I get rgb camera data displayed in rviz - the main display stays black. Once upon I time back in diamondback I did see data here.

Meeting Presentation for February 27th.

Sat, 03/02/2013 - 02:52
David Crawley and the Ubiquity_Robotics Team will review the progress made so far, as well as some of the learning principles that underpin the project. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop an inexpensive hardware platform capable of light domestic duty.

Hi Tim, Patrick,

The link for the git package on the ros_arduino_bridge wiki didn't work
(electric), however I did copy and "git" it from my ros_workspace.

I was also able to make it (under turtlebot, diamond? electric??) with

So not sure what I've got yet, and I haven't programmed the Arduino yet.

Running neato on ROS

Fri, 03/01/2013 - 19:53
I got my Neato XV-11 talking to ROS via Fergy's ROS node(fuerte), but when I start-up RVIZ I get no data back. Does anyone have a good neato.vcg or can tell me how to set up RVIZ? I am getting a no fixed frame error, and a warning about no data on the laser scan. I thnik Camp ran into these issues a while back.

Robomagellan cone color(s) and cmvision

Fri, 03/01/2013 - 01:05
Sorry for the cross post.

I'm building a 'bot for Robogames (San Mateo) Robomagellan. I've
FINALLY made a little progress with cmvision on ROS Electric.

My current procedure:

colorgui.launch works, but only occasionally. Some special start up
