Robot Block Party

Wed, 04/24/2013 - 22:42
For those who didn't get a chance to go, here is a write up and photos from
the Block Party.

Photo #5 in the set of 14 photos found in the middle of the page should be
recognized by many of us. Let us hope that he does not do his laundry
between now and Robogames and thus does not wear his orange shirt to

RoboMagellan cones

Wed, 04/24/2013 - 12:23
Is there a way to find out which cones are going to be used in this year's
RoboMagellan competition?
I noticed there exist several slightly different types.

Party will take place at the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab @
Stanford on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 1 to 6 pm. As in previous
years, HBRC will occupy several tables at the event. We need you and your
robots to help fill the tables. All robots are welcome. The event is

Does anyone have a TurtleBot 2 (aka Kobuki)?

Sat, 04/20/2013 - 08:20
Just curious if anyone has yet tried out the new TurtleBot 2
<[link]>,
also known as the Kobuki? I'm particularly interested in how well it
autodocks and if anyone has used it with ROS SLAM. My old TurtleBot 1
is showing its age so I'm wondering if it's worth replacing with the new

USB charging port for a small robot

Thu, 04/18/2013 - 08:57
Perhaps I'm searching online for the wrong phrases, but I can't seem to
find much info online about adding a USB charging port to a small robot.

The robot runs on 4xAAA batteries and the primary goal is to enable my
young son to plug it into the USB port in the wall to charge overnight,
avoiding the need for adapters in electrical outlets.

SRF08 ranger on Arduino

Mon, 04/15/2013 - 03:37
I've got a single SRF08 ranger running on the supplied 0xF8 address, but
I can't get it to work on the other addresses (I need several sensors).
I have verified the ranger to be addressed to 0xE8, but the ranger does
not reply to either the programmed address 0xE8, or the +4 address the
author uses for subsequent calls.

FTGH: Extra TurtleBot/Create power boards

Sun, 04/14/2013 - 18:14
I ordered a couple of the TurtleBot/Create adapter boards from BatchPCB and they threw in a handful more.
So I have I have 3 extra boards Free To Good Home(FTGH).
If you've got a Create and a netbook laying around and have been thinking about making a MockTurtleBot, this would be useful.

Let me know if you want one and I'll get it to you either at the next meeting or when we next bump into each other at

How about a Saitek X45 digital (USB) joy stick and throttle control? (again free)

Fri, 04/12/2013 - 09:50
These are pretty heavy duty devices, that I never ended up using. Its not
strictly a robotics thing but neither were the Legos really. Again free
(they're only worth $50 on ebay which is where I got this picture. But if
looking to fly something remotely these are pretty good quality. They
provide enough resistance that you really want to bolt them down to

Free Legos anyone?

Fri, 04/12/2013 - 02:21
I have a couple bins (those green ones from 10 years ago) of legos, a bunch of motors and sensors and two of the OLD style controllers. Free to anyone that wants them. jrg at toasterfish dot com and they're yours! (I'm moving so its out with the not-used-in-years stuff! :-)

3d printing

Thu, 04/11/2013 - 02:03
Bill,
I have access to a Alfina printer, the resolution is .15 and I would be happy to print a couple of small parts for you, free if you could pick them up in SF or berkeley.

3D Printing Service

Wed, 04/10/2013 - 04:38
I have a small part I need made. (a 11mm wheel and pully for my Nanosumo
robot). Is there a 3D printing service anyone likes they would recommend?
It would be great to get around .1mm resolution if possible.
